300: a movie about real men
When challenged by a Persian messenger as to how the Spartan Queen dare say anything in the presence of men, she quickly replied:
"....because only Spartan women give birth to real men."
When all the media proclaim that Americans do not want this war, that we only want peace, that we should pullout and cut defense spending, that the terrorists didn't mean it and should be forgiven, that we've forgotten about 9/11, the USS Cole, Cobar Towers, Munich, Lockerby, and the REAL REASON for the Crusades.....when we are in the midst of the wussification of our young boys, teaching them to get in touch with their feminine sides, to not express their anger, when all the media would have you believe that gays and hippies are the norm instead of the reality that they are the exception, and basically deny any aspect of the warrior archetype that is an integral and undeniable part of our human existance and survival......
then why the hell is the movie 300 making so much damn money in the box office? Who are these people that are paying $9 a ticket (plus popcorn and soda) sometimes going to see it two and three times to replay the blood, guts, and patriotism that is the Spartan culture? Who are these people that would vote with their wallets to support a movie that celebrates and remembers those would die for their country, their culture, their values, and to protect future generations?
Michael Savage, radio talk show host of "The Savage Nation" asked if this country even had any "Spartans". The answer was "absolutely, in the form of our US Marine Corps." And even in the midst of our wimpification of our men in this country, we only need those few "300" to defend a whole country. They are to be held up and admired as the heroes they are, not denegrated and disrespected like the media and Hollywood-left does to them. Our warriors of World War II were celebrated and regarded as the greatest generation. The young strong Spartans in today's Iraq and Afghanistan are the same faces as World War II. They are today's Spartans. And we should encourage our children to aspire to be the next Spartans.

Great post. Last I checked though, Marines were not the only Spartans showing up in todays war. Especially considering that the war has changed, cooks from the kitchen in even the AIRFORCE mind you, are having to be out on the dangerous streets on foot. Just knowing people who have been and who are "fighting" currently at this very moment, it's important to give all of our "Spartans" credit... they are all showing up and it would be wrong to classify one (or more) entire military branch as being "less than" any other.

Good point, and I respect all who sign their death certificate to sacrifice their lives for our country....but, I am going to stick to Marines being "Spartans" as they are the only fighting force where all Marines are rifleman first. They are the only fighting force that identifies themselves as their affiliation and not just something they do. For example, if you ask someone in the Army/USAF/Navy what they do for a living they'll say, "I'm in the Army/USAF/Navy." Ask a Marine what he does for a living and he'll say, "I AM a Marine." And the Marines are the only fighting force that is still all male on the front lines.
Furthermore, the history of the Corps also gives evidence of "the few, the proud" in their ability to seize a hill, give it to the Army, the Army loses the hill, so the Marines have to go in and take it again. When it absolutely positively must be destroyed overnight (call the Marines).
And like Spartans, "the title is earned, never given."

Hello there. I am very curious to ask what made you compare '300' to the current war in Iraq and the conflict in Afghanistan. The call for bravery is given out to everybody. But the face of war has changed throughout history.

It was easy given that a movie about war was released at a time when our country is at war. One can't help but make contrasts and comparisons. The call for bravery does go out to everybody, but only a few answer. The face of war has indeed changed for worse and better. For better in that technology makes our troops smarter and safer, all the while encouraging us to some day take boots off the ground and fight an all technology war. For the worse in that fewer and fewer are willing to answer that call, and though the best are even better, there is a looming majority of men who have been groomed since childhood to get in touch with their feminine side, to act on their feelings than on rational thinking, to be more androgynous, to think more of themselves and what they want and less about their team, their family, their community, their country, and to be less empathetic to people oppressed in other parts of the world. They are raised to be wimpy narcissists who throw temper tantrums when they can't find a pink LaCoste shirt to match their Abercrombie ripped up jeans, flip-flops, and shaggy Sanjayah hair-do.
So when I see 300 earn millions week after week in the box office that tells me what many in this country are truly yearning for in comparison to what we have today.

You're applying the premise of a graphic novelist who also happens to write comics for Marvel to the current events effecting the US today? Muscle chick you may be but you are an idiot of the highest order.

I love the discussion this topic is drumming up. It's driving the liberals crazy because they have erased the warrior archetype out of their membories.
I am in fact applying the history and legend of the actual Spartan culture. The graphic novelist of 300 applied that history to his work, and after seeing the movie based on his work my curiosity was peaked enough to do some research on my own on the history of the Spartans. And what I found was a very gruesome way of life. Much harsher that I would prefer to live in. But there were many laws, values, and mores that I believe to be superior that we lack in our own American society.
Primarly, the warrior archetype that is held in such high esteem for Spartans, our military used to be heroes in the days of World War 2, now they are spit on in public by hippies and scum liberals. And that archetype is being sanitized away by not allowing our children to express that INTEGRAL part of the personality as heavily researched by world famous psychologist Carl Jung.
Another concept valued in Spartan culture, and being snubbed out in current American culture, is the belief in something bigger than yourself. God, country, family, teamwork...narcissism reigns supreme in our egoistic society. And it's disgusting. It is the root cause of all ills and evils: being selfish.

I'm with the one who said you were ignorant for saying marines are the only "Spartans". go take a look at this story... http://www.sg.af.mil/news/story_print.asp?id=123055177 This man was on the front lines following Taliban forces and now fights what he loves most: the right to stay in his Air Force. If you think he's any less of a man than any marine then you're wrong. Go educate yourself and see that just because the other services aren't all male that doesn't mean they're not on the front lines and in MANY cases further ahead than any marine. Also need a remind you this is not WWII. The USAF was credited with winning the 1st gulf war. They demoralized the enemy to the point that once the ground troops were released the enemy for the most part just surrendered.

Nicole,
I just returned this summer from a year in Iraq. A "Citizen/Soldier" I am now back home to Atlanta after 17 months away from home.
Thanks for your kind words about our women and men in uniform. I'm sorry that some posters could not look beyond what was a quote about the Marine to see the sentiment behind your posting.
I served with 2,800 Soldiers who were warriors. They flew through sand, RPG's, direct and indirect fire to meet the mission. They are some of the finest men and women I know. Thank you for honoring them.

People fail to understand the concept that the Spartans were the Elite of all fighters. Never to say that others were/are not strong, even if their power was/is a derivitive of their numbers. Which is often the case. There are currently 175,000-200,000 Marines. They have the least of any deployable branch of service, yet they deploy more and into more countries full of danger than any other branch of this country's great military force. If you wish to call someone a Spartan because you are a military member in this country you may need to look a little more deeply into historical fact. The Marine Corps requires all of their Marines to utilize at a minimum 1 weapon (M16A2 service rifle), they also have their own Martial Arts Program, they have standard for a warrior not for someone looking to maintain a steady job and get an education to benifit themselves. The Marines in this great country's Marine Corps have an Esprit De Corps that some will never understand. I will never take away anything from another branch of service and say they don't have members of their service that have the same dedication the Marines have. It's just that the Marines Corps has more of them. The spartans from day one were bred to be all about war and fighting. The Marines that go through boot camp aren't just taught how to clean their uniforms and PT, they are taught about Marine Corps History, about having Honor, Courage and Commitment, and about are infused with a want to go to combat so that they "can get some." They use words and phrases like "Kill or Kill bodies" to symbolize their motivation level. These things aren't something that is instilled into everyone in the military. The Marines of today's Marine Corps are still bred to BE the "Finest Fighting Organization in the World," not a part of it.

Ghostly you took the words out of my mouth, I thank you and Nicole for the appreciation of what we do. Not taking anything from the USAF/ARMY/NAVY/COAST GUARD, they are my brothers in arms and always will be...but its an absolute fact we have a force of under 200,000. It may not be 300, but it's the least of any branch. Contrast and compare, bayonettes, hand to hand combat, rigorous PT, Kill, Get some, oorah, blow shit up, in-your-face fuckin destruction...when it comes to boots on the ground doing a professional job of taking human life, the Marine Corps is second to none. I'll reiterate, not saying we're "better" than anyone else, but I think we may fit the Spartan description a little more accurately. "Come and get them" is Leonidas' response when warned by the Persians to surrender their weapons. This is in fact a historical quote and adopted as the motto for the Green Armys 1st Corps. In Greek, it translates to "molon labe"...and it is now our units motto. Our job is war.

True spatans are those willing to die for the cause. remember these brave words as you read the end of the post ...
"The young strong Spartans in today's Iraq and Afghanistan are the same faces as World War II." the movie 300 is about spartans defending the border of greece against invading Persians ... Strangly enough, in Iraq and Afghanistan, the USA is the invader, putting forcing their believe onto the local population.
You should be proud of every kamikaze pilot, and suicide bommer. They are the true spartans of today...

Anonymous, your stupidity is easily apparent in your absolute butchering of the english language in addition to your lack of respect for human life. "putting forcing their believe onto the local population" What I decipher of your cryptic message is that you think the US is forcing OUR beliefs on the people of Iraq. However, what do you think Al Quada and radical muslims are doing to their own people? Do you think they should have the right to force their women and disabled children to blow themselves up in retribution for their husband/family's sins? That's fucked up.
I have no respect for someone who seeks to blow up non-combatants. I have no respect for a terrorist who uses women and children as human shields by hiding themselves in homes or mosques. I have no respect for terrorist scum who take civilian hostages (reporters, relief workers, Christians, etc) and then cut their heads off with a dull knife. And in the most recent case of missing persons they cut off the fingers of 5 hostages and sent them to a military base. Why can't they come to the gates of the base and fight like real men?
I have no respect for a religion that seeks to keeps their women imprisoned and uneducated so they can be easily controlled. Those are not Spartans. They are cowards.
A Spartan does not fear someone else being stronger or smarter, especially their women. They do not send in their weak to fight their battles for them. They do not wear masks to hide their identity.
Without the battle of Thermopoli as depicted in the movie 300, western civilization would not be what it is today. We are the United States today because of Greece back then. Without that battle and the resulting surge Greece would not have survived and we'd all be bowing to Allah today.
